Abstract The National Directory of Farmers Markets maintained by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) indicates a 400 percent increase in the number of farmers markets between 1994 (1,755 ) and 2011 (7,175) (USDA AMS, 2012a). As of September 2011, a total of 2,445 farmers markets and direct marketing farmers were authorized to accept the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (Roper, 2012). While the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) efforts have been successful in promoting farmers markets among SNAP recipients, FNS is committed to further increasing the presence of farmers markets and direct marketing farmers among SNAP retailers and to attracting a greater number of SNAP participants to shop at farmers markets and direct marketing farmer outlets.
