Abstract
|
Airports are vital national resources and a well-functioning airport system is essential to U.S. participation in the global economy. They serve a key role in the transportation of people and goods and in regional, national, and international commerce. Airports provide (and often operate) facilities and infrastructure that accommodate various services needed to access the national and international air transportation system. Airports are where the nations aviation system connects with other modes of transportation and where federal responsibility for managing and regulating air traffic operations intersects with the roles of state and local governments that own and operate most airports. When airport needs are not being adequately addressed by existing research programs, research is necessary to solve common operating problems, to adapt appropriate new technologies from other industries, and to introduce innovations into the airport industry.
