Abstract Since the first known line-of-duty death more than 200 years ago, more than 19,000 U.S. law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty. In fact, in the past 20 years, on average over 160 officers are killed in the line of duty each year - with roughly 35 to 40 percent from gunshots. This fact demonstrates the critical importance of increasing our understanding of the factors impacting the performance of body armor, often referred to as bullet-resistant vests, in real world conditions.
