Abstract As the United States draws down from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, more attention will be given to strengthening existing relationships and fostering new ones in the Western hemisphere. Using the foundation of shared security interests as a framework, the United States will seek to advance the role of regional defense institutions to address the threats of today's security environment, assist partner countries in the development of their forces, as well as promote integration and interoperability. As noted by Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta in the opening remarks of the policy statement, the United States will strive to be the 'security partner of choice' at both the regional and global level.
