Abstract The National Institute of Justice is the only federal agency devoted solely to bringing the benefits of scientific research and technology development to the nation's criminal justice system. NIJ is the research, development and evaluation arm of the U.S. Department of Justice. It helps criminal justice professionals by conducting basic and applied research, assessing new technologies, promoting innovations and evaluating programs to learn what works and what does not work. NIJ applies a rigorous scientific approach to its endeavors. Researchers harness the power of science to make the American justice system more effective, efficient and equitable. The Institute works closely with criminal justice professionals and researchers to establish its research priorities.
