Abstract This review provides guidance on the DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations contained in Title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (HMR; 49 CFR) which govern the packaging and shipment of radioactive material. These materials have an excellent safety record when packaged, labeled, marked and transported in accordance with these regulations. Hazardous materials (hazmat) employers are required to ensure that each hazmat employee is trained in accordance with the requirements prescribed in 49 CFR 172.702. The HMR requires 'hazmat employers' involved in the transport of radioactive material, e.g., shippers and carriers, to properly train their 'hazmat employees'. The present document is designed to assist in advanced-level training of hazmat employees who are involved with radioactive material packaging and transportation.
