Abstract This is the 17th edition of state-by-state snapshots issued by the Joint Economic Committee during the 112th Congress and includes state-level data through April 2012. This months report shows that more than three-in-five states gained private-sector jobs in April. Nationally, 130,000 private-sector positions were added during the month, a deceleration in the pace of job growth, following gains of 166,000 in March and 254,000 in February. Manufacturing continued to show strength during April: manufacturing output increased by 0.6 percent and the ISM reading of 54.8 indicated expansion of economic activity in the manufacturing sector for the 33nd consecutive month. Retail sales growth slowed to 0.1 percent in April, following a gain of 0.7 percent in March.
