Abstract The purpose of this Safety IDEA project was to conduct field testing to investigate the feasibility of detecting defective rail vehicle bearings using rail-mounted accelerometers. For decades, the railroad industry has continuously invested in technologies for monitoring and diagnosing rail bearing conditions and defects. The harsh railroad operating environments have made in-situ testing of rail bearings more challenging than testing of other industrial bearings.
