Title Neutron-Induced Fission Measurements Using DANCE and LSDS Facilities at LANL.

Abstract Many areas of applied nuclear physics such as nuclear forensics, stockpile stewardship, nuclear nonproliferation, and nuclear energy, require new or improved cross sections of neutron-induced reactions. I will review some neutron-induced fission cross section measurements needed for these applications on selected actinides. The measurements were performed using unique LANL facilities: Detector for Advanced Neutron Capture Experiments (DANCE) and Lead Slowing Down Spectrometer (LSDS). DANCE was designed and built to deliver high fidelity measurements of neutron capture and neutroninduced fission cross sections. The DANCE array consists of 160 BaF(sup 2) gamma-ray detectors - fast and efficient scintillators. Nearly full solid angle coverage of DANCE enables us to use gamma-ray calorimetry for the neutron capture, neutron-induced fission and background characterization. Modem data acquisition embraces 324 channels of 500 MHz Acqiris digitizers and sophisticated on-line and offline data analyzers. When coupled with auxiliary fission fragment detectors, such as parallel plate avalanche counter (PPAC), simultaneous measurements of neutron-induced fission and neutron capture are possible. In addition to cross sections, the detailed information on prompt fission gamma-ray emission was obtained and preliminary results on (sub 235)U will be presented.
