Abstract There is a need to implement innovative and cost-effective replacement technologies to address the multiple health, safety, and compliance issues associated with the use of zinc phosphate and chromate/chrome containing conversion coatings while maintaining military readiness for national defense. The new technology must be compatible with original equipment manufacturer/depot infrastructure to and with the current coatings and substrates used by the Department of Defense, and have corrosion performance equivalent or better than current pretreatment technology. The objective of this program is to demonstrate a novel zirconium-based pretreatment that will be environmentally acceptable, cost effective, and perform equal to baseline pretreatments for multimetal application. The demonstration will be on a military asset coated and compatible with the existing chemical agent-resistant coating system.
