Title IL-6 Receptor Isoforms and Ovarian Cancer.

Abstract Ovarian cancers are one of the most deadly malignancies. After initial treatment, the majority of patients exhibit recurrence of tumors which do not respond well to current treatments. Thus, a better understanding of the factors involved in ovarian cancer and ovarian cancer metastasis is needed to reduce the high mortality of patients with this disease. The research funding in this grant was to investigate the possible role of IL6 and the IL6 receptor (IL6R) as a critical player in both the host tumor microenvironment and as factors in the tumor cell proper. The grant entailed two main tasks. Task 1 was to identify IL6R isoforms in patient samples. The results from these studies showed that IL6R is overexpressed in the tumor epithelial cells and soluble IL6R is present in the host environment of ovarian cancer patients. The second task in this grant was to determine the function of IL6/IL6R in tumor stroma relationships. Here, our data show that both tumor cell expression and expression of IL6 signaling in the host environment are important determinants of ovarian cancer colonization. These studies stress the importance of the IL6 signaling pathway as a potential target in ovarian cancer.
