Abstract Numerous Americans fear that their way of life is at risk, a risk that is generated as American society grows increasingly diverse. To strengthen the bonds of a great nation, this thesis describes how a national service program, or better yet, an American Service program, could be implemented. The thesis explores the theory behind national service along and presents both domestic and foreign examples of it. By extracting best practices from case studies, the authors offer a set of 10 prescriptions for a future American Service program that range from making it compulsory to offering different options for service.
