Social Security Administration's Death Master File – Raw Data Files Products

The Death Master File (DMF) from the Social Security Administration (SSA) contains over 85 million records of deaths that have been reported to SSA from 1936 to present. Each DMF product includes the following information on each decedent, if the data are available to the SSA: social security number, name, date of birth, date of death. NTIS is the only authorized official distributor of the DMF on the Web.

The SSA does not have a death record for all persons; therefore, SSA does not guarantee the veracity of the file. Thus, the absence of a particular person is not proof this person is alive.

Comprehensive full file issued each quarter by the SSA Purchasers of the Full File, who intend to keep their Death Master File current ARE REQUIRED to purchase a subscription to the DMF Weekly Updates product or DMF Monthly Updates product, beginning with the week or month corresponding to the latest issue of the Full File. This is a MANDATE from the Social Security Administration.

Issue Dates and Schedule:

• The March issue contains the full file through February 28
• The June issue contains the full file through May 31
• The September issue contains the full file through August 31
• The December issue contains the full file through November 30

The Social Security Administration's Death Master File Weekly Updates product contains new deaths, changes and deletions to the Death Master File (DMF) issued by the SSA on a weekly basis. New subscribers to this file ARE REQUIRED to purchase the corresponding quarter's Full File and any previous Updates within that quarter. This file is not available as a single issue.

The record specifications are the same as the DMF Full File except that the usual blank position '1' will have an "A" (for Add to the DMF), a 'C' (for change a part of the DMF record) or a 'D' (for delete from the DMF).
