Except for moderate conscious sedation, CMS Anesthesia rules do not allow separate payment for anesthesia services provided by the physician performing a procedure. The NCCI contains edits bundling numerous services into the anesthesia codes 0XXXX based on the services being standard preparation or monitoring services included in anesthesia or the services being component services of anesthesia. Some of these components were bundled into most global surgical procedures.

The code pair data is provided as an ASCII text file for users who wish to load the data into their own database.
Each record contains either the comprehensive or mutually exclusive code pairs (both current and inactive), a short statement about the reason for exclusion, the starting/ending dates for each code, as appropriate, and a single digit code for the CCI modifier indicator.
